Botswana is seeking cutting and polishing training from Indian companies as part of its effort to develop a beneficiation industry in the Southern African country.
“We are looking for increasing the number of slots for Botswana nationals to come for training courses here, especially in the diamond polishing and cutting sector,” Botswana’s High Commissioner to India, Dorcas Ana Kgosietsile, told Indo-Asian News Service (IANS).
Kgosietsile noted the synergies between the two countries’ diamond industries which she reasoned should attract more Indian sightholders to set up shop in Botswana. So far, two Indian companies have established factories in Botswana, out of the 16 cutting operations in the country. Many have Indian employees training their workers, IANS reported.
“I know that Indians can cut any shape or size, even if it is the size of a grain,” she said. “I have been telling people in Botswana that they should be looking at India seriously.”
Botswana is the world’s largest diamond producing country by value with mining conducted in a joint venture between the govcernment and De Beers.
